Inaugural meeting of EP Delegation for relations with Japan

Today I chaired the inaugural meeting of the European Parliament's relations with Japan. We welcomed the Japanese Ambassador to the EU, His Excellency Mr Keiichi Katakami.

The Ambassador gave his views on the state of play of the EU-Japan Free Trade Agreement as well as the Strategic Partnership Agreement, which both sides would like to conclude in the near future.

The EU and Japan have recently completed the 7th round of negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement, and we expect there will be an 8th round before the end of this year. Work is ongoing on the Strategic Partnership Agreement.

In my new capacity as Chair of the European Parliament's Delegation to Japan I will endeavour to continue the good work of my predecessor Mr Hans Van Baalen in fostering the links between the EU and Japan.
