European Parliament pushes for more effective anti-terrorism measures

The European Parliament demands new measures to better protect EU citizens against terror attacks. A resolution approved by the Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday calls for tighter immigration checks on passengers entering the 26-nation Schengen zone of free movement. The MEPs would also like to see more investment in social and education programs to address the root causes of Islamic radicalization across the EU.

The MEPs have also shown willingness to back an EU-wide program to share airline passenger data (PNR), a proposal that had become stalled over concerns related to personal data protection. The resolution calls on the European Commission to resume work both on the draft PNR directive and on a comprehensive data protection package.

The resolution strongly calls for better exchange of information between the law enforcement authorities of member states and EU agencies, and notes that global sharing of law-enforcement information should intensify.

MEP Petr Ježek says that before new legislation is adopted, the measures that are currently in place should be evaluated.

At Brussels airport, for instance, some airlines do not require travellers to show their IDs, not even while boarding a plane, which means that anyone can travel on a ticket that’s in your name. That greatly diminishes the significance of PNR and other such tools.”

The EP resolution is available here.
