Petr Ježek: EU must join new international mediation process in South Sudan

MEP Petr Ježek has sent an open letter to EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy Federica Mogherini, urging the EU to fully participate in a renewed mediation process to reach a peace agreement for South Sudan.

In his letter, Petr Ježek welcomes Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)'s decision to reform the mediation process after the failure of last week’s peace talks, and to form a coherent international contact group that could include the African Union, the US, China, the UK, Norway, and the EU. MEP Ježek believes it is crucial to unite relevant regional and international organizations and other key players in order to multiply leverage on the two warring parties and to reach an overall peace and transitional settlement agreement.

The Czech MEP also strongly believes the EU should join and actively participate in this new international mediation group, and assume a leading role in applying pressure and incentive mechanisms on those responsible for the conflict in South Sudan to try and reach a comprehensive peace agreement that would end the catastrophe that has been ongoing for nearly 15 months, killing tens of thousands of people.
