Mogherini’s reply to Petr Ježek: EU urges for the publication of South Sudan report

In February, Petr Ježek sent a letter to EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Federica Mogherini, co-signed by cross party members of the European Parliament, calling for the publication of the African Union Commission of Inquiry’s report on South Sudan.

In her reply, High Representative Mogherini says she shares Petr Ježek’s view and believes as well that the publication of the AU Commission of Inquiry’s findings and its recommendations on accountability are necessary to ensure that such violence against civilians cannot be committed with impunity.

The European Union will therefore keep calling on the African Union’s Peace and Security Council to consider the report of and to follow up on its findings without further delay. This answer, although late, is a good signal and shows that the EU remains actively engaged in South Sudan.

In the meantime, Petr Ježek has sent another letter to HR Mogherini, urging for the European Union to participate in a new mediation process for South Sudan.
