What has EU learnt from financial crisis?

The Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON) of the European Parliament on Tuesday debated a report analysing the effect of financial services regulation enacted in the wake of the global financial crisis. The report also takes a forward look at the European Commission's planned Capital Markets Union (CMU).

During the discussions, Petr Ježek, Liberal shadow rapporteur, highlighted that much has been done to ensure a more robust financial services framework in Europe. He called for the Commission to undertake a thorough cumulative impact assessment on all measures enacted since the crisis, reasoning that with such a large number of individual pieces of legislation it is important for us now to take stock before enacting a full Capital Markets Union.

“The project of the Capital Markets Union is an opportunity to develop markets across the European Union. In our view, it is essential that proposals which come through from the Commission during the upcoming years are ambitious and provide a framework which will enable capital markets to flourish also in those member states where they are at an early stage of development, such as the Czech Republic,” Petr Ježek said during the debate.
