European Parliament approves deal to end roaming charges

In a key vote at Tuesday’s plenary session, the European Parliament approved the abolition of roaming charges by mid-June 2017. The legislation that will end charges for using mobile phones abroad is part of a  telecommunications package, as proposed by the European Commission. The legislation is part of a telecommunications package, proposed by the European Commission, aimed at creating a digital single market in the EU.

In the vote, Petr Ježek backed the legislation. “The end of roaming has been a key priority for me. I’m glad we have finally made sure the charges will be dropped,” Petr Ježek said after the vote.

The European Parliament wanted to ban roaming charges already in 2015, but due to resistance from the member states it was not possible to abolish them before 15 June 2017.
