MEPs approve report on EU financial regulation

The Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) of the European Parliament on Tuesday approved a report calling for the European Commission to undertake a review of the cumulative impact of the financial legislation adopted in the EU in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.

The report welcomes the Commission’s efforts to analyse financial regulation adopted in recent years but notes that it has fallen short of providing a full assessment and quantitative analysis of the overall effects of the regulation, or the interaction of the individual measures.

Petr Ježek, who is ALDE shadow rapporteur for the report, contributed a series of key amendments which also won support from the members of the committee.

The amendments included a call for the European Commission to encourage the development of capital markets in 'newer' member states, as well as encouraging greater input into the legislative process from smaller stakeholders.

The international dimension was also highlighted, with Petr Ježek emphasising the need for developments on an international level to be taken into account when drafting European legislation.
