EP calls for new donor conference for South Sudan

The joint resolution adopted at the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg on Thursday by 626 votes strongly condemns the recent abduction of at least 89 children in South Sudan. MEPs also express deep concern over the worsening security and humanitarian situation in the country, and calls on all sides of the ongoing conflict to immediately end violence and cease human rights violations.

On the initiative of Petr Ježek, the resolution calls on the international community to convene a new international donor conference for South Sudan when all conditions for peace have been met and a mechanism of proper distribution of revenues is established.

The European Parliament also urges the African Union to publish its inquiry report on South Sudan. In his speech at the plenary session, Petr Ježek called for the establishment of an international contact group in South Sudan, which could bring together various actors involved in the peace process. This would ensure coherence and generate the desirable pressure and momentum.

The resolution is available here, the entire debate in EP on South Sudan can be viewed here.
