Japan leaders interested in EU’s response to migration crisis

Petr Ježek led a delegation of MEPs on a visit to Tokyo on September 24 and 25. The focus of the visit was the preparation of the upcoming inter-parliamentary meeting between European parliamentarians and members of the Japanese Diet.

The European Parliament delegation met with a number of prominent politicians including the Senior Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yasuhide Nakayama and the Chairperson of the House of Representatives Special Committee on Security Legislation, Yasukazu Hamada.

The agenda also featured discussions on the EU-Japan Free Trade Agreement. The visit culminated in a symposium on EU-Japan cooperation, with Japanese stakeholders taking a particular interest in Europe's response to the current migration crisis.

“The visit was primarily dedicated to preparing the next meeting between European and Japanese lawmakers, and to discussing the planned free trade agreement. But it was striking that almost everyone we met was interested to hear about the migration crisis and the EU’s response to it,” said Peter Ježek.

The next inter-parliamentary meeting between the EU and Japan is likely to take place in the spring of 2016.
