Petr Ježek
Born in Prague in 1965. A graduate of Prague’s University of Economics, Petr Ježek joined his country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as a diplomat. For some ten years, he held relatively high posts related to the country’s ties with the EU, e.g. heading the Foreign Ministry’s European Integration Department and serving as Deputy State Secretary for European Affairs. He also worked as chief of staff of then Czech Prime Minister Vladimír Špidla. In 2014, Petr Ježek was elected Member of the European Parliament on the ballot of the ANO 2011 party.

The leaders of warring parties in South Sudan should be targeted by sanctions to make them agree to a ceasefire, Petr Ježek told the EU’s foreign policy chief during Tuesday’s plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
“Political leaders in South Sudan clearly do not care about their own population but rather about their villas and bank accounts outside the country,” Petr Ježek said, arguing the EU should also reconsider imposing an arms embargo on the country.
Petr Ježek then asked High Presentative Mogherini how she was planning to bring the opposing sides to stick to an agreement they signed with the EU in August concerning ceasefire, ending impunity and oil revenues. The Czech MEP also asked about the EU’s strategy for promoting a peace deal on local levels, and how it will address food security in the country.
