Petr Ježek
Born in Prague in 1965. A graduate of Prague’s University of Economics, Petr Ježek joined his country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and served as a diplomat. For some ten years, he held relatively high posts related to the country’s ties with the EU, e.g. heading the Foreign Ministry’s European Integration Department and serving as Deputy State Secretary for European Affairs. He also worked as chief of staff of then Czech Prime Minister Vladimír Špidla. In 2014, Petr Ježek was elected Member of the European Parliament on the ballot of the ANO 2011 party.

As shadow rapporteur for the ALDE group, Petr Ježek on Tuesday took part in a debate on a proposed new directive on combating terrorism to hear the feedback from the European Commission, the Council of the EU, Europol, Eurojust and the Fundamental Rights Agency as well as rapporteur Monika Hohlmeier and other shadow rapporteurs from different parliamentary groups.
Two main objectives of the directive were discussed: the criminalization of travelling for terrorism purposes, and the financing of terrorist groups. The Commission’s proposal calls for a bigger scope that would criminalize terrorism-related travelling both from and to the EU as well as travelling within the EU, whereas the Council would like to criminalize only travelling out of the EU.
Petr Ježek expressed concern over the scope of the travelling offence, favouring the broader approach of the Commission. Regarding the financing of terrorist groups, MEP Ježek asked the Council representatives whether it was really necessary to link that offence to a specific terrorist act, again favouring Commission’s broader approach.
In total, 384 amendments to the draft anti-terrorist directive were tabled this week; the Commission hopes an agreement on the final text will be found before the summer recess.
