The European Parliament’s Committee for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs on Monday approved a draft directive on combating terrorism, providing the EU with new tools to prevent terrorist attacks.
Focusing on the phenomenon of “foreign fighters”, the draft legislation aims to criminalize preparatory acts such as training and travel abroad to engage in terrorist activities. It would also make aiding, inciting and attempting terrorist acts criminal offences.
“Due to the current level of terrorist threat, there is an urgent need to equip our judicial authorities with appropriate tools to tackle the issue of foreign fighters,” said Petr Ježek who followed the file as ALDE Group rapporteur.
“This is an EU-wide issue which is why we need a harmonized approach. I am glad that after months of hard work, the draft directive passed the LIBE committee. This is an important piece of legislation what will make the EU a safer place,” added MEP Ježek.
